New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has not yet obtained federal security clearance, leaving him unable to receive classified briefings on potential threats to the city nine months into his tenure. Mamdani addressed the issue on Monday, characterizing the timeline as typical for the clearance process.

"The process of my getting a federal security clearance is ongoing," Mamdani told reporters at a City Hall press conference. He added, "A number of senior administration officials have a security clearance at this time. The NYPD also regularly briefs me on intelligence investigations that do not involve federally classified information, and we will continue to move forward."

The mayor's lack of clearance could potentially delay official responses during emergencies by limiting his access to critical intelligence. This situation arises as the city prepares for an influx of foreign dignitaries during the current session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Mamdani is not the first New York City mayor to experience delays with federal security clearances. Former Mayor Bill de Blasio also lacked the necessary clearance at a comparable point in his term, having not yet applied for it. Eric Adams, another previous mayor, had his clearance revoked following his indictment by federal authorities. Mamdani attended a 25th-anniversary memorial for those affected by 9/11-related illnesses on Rikers Island on September 4, 2026.
