New York City is implementing comprehensive security measures across its five boroughs for the Fourth of July weekend, anticipating hundreds of thousands of attendees for a series of major events including the Macy's fireworks, a naval review, and a World Cup match.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that a detailed security plan is in place for each event to ensure public safety. The New York Police Department will significantly increase its uniformed officer presence, with officers working extended 12-hour shifts. Coordination with state and federal partners, including the Coast Guard and the Navy, is a key component of the security strategy, particularly given the maritime and aerial components of the festivities.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that heightened security measures began on Wednesday to coincide with the arrival of U.S. and international naval fleets. She emphasized that while the city is operating in a heightened threat environment, there are no specific or credible threats known at this time. The NYPD's intelligence division, joint terrorism task force, and counterterrorism teams are actively monitoring all potential leads.

Tactical units, including heavy weapons teams, K-9 units, and specialized aviation, harbor, and counter-drone teams, will be deployed. Security will be particularly stringent along the city's waterfronts, with screenings required for attendees of ticketed and non-ticketed events related to the Sail4th parade. This includes designated viewing areas at parks and piers in Manhattan.

Major infrastructure changes are also part of the plan. The West Side Highway will be closed to traffic south of 59th Street until 2 p.m. on Saturday, with a section remaining closed to commercial vehicles for the entire day. The FDR Drive and the Brooklyn Bridge will be shut down starting at 3 p.m. to prepare for the Macy's fireworks display, which will utilize both the East River and the Hudson River. Specific waterfront areas in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Manhattan's South Street Seaport will be accessible only to ticketed viewers who undergo thorough security checks.

The Clark Street subway station in Brooklyn is scheduled for closure from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. during the fireworks, though the MTA is adding extra trains to manage expected crowd surges. Officials are strongly advising the public to use public transportation due to anticipated heavy traffic throughout the city.

The weekend's events include the International Naval and Aviation Review, a Parade of Sails, the traditional Macy's Fourth of July fireworks, and a World Cup match between Brazil and Norway at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. The arrival of ships for the Parade of Sails began on June 30.
