Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang developed a close relationship with a Chinese business executive, Alice Huang, whom the CIA suspects of smuggling advanced U.S. microchips to China. This connection reportedly raised alarms within the White House and U.S. intelligence communities, according to reports by The New York Times.
Alice Huang, who is not related to the Nvidia CEO, is the head of Megaspeed, a tech firm believed to have acted as an intermediary for funneling banned artificial intelligence chips to China. These alleged actions would violate U.S. policies designed to prevent Nvidia's cutting-edge AI chips from reaching Beijing, a critical concern given Nvidia's central role in the global race for AI dominance.
Intelligence circles became aware of the U.S. citizen's contact with Alice Huang during an investigation into her alleged espionage activities for China. Upon learning the identity of the U.S. citizen involved was Jensen Huang, the CEO of one of the world's most influential tech companies, U.S. officials expressed surprise.
While the exact timeline of the relationship and its discovery remains unclear, President Trump was reportedly briefed on the intelligence findings approximately one year ago. Despite his public emphasis on securing U.S. leadership in the AI race against China, Trump reportedly chose not to take action regarding Jensen Huang.
Nvidia, with a market capitalization exceeding $5 trillion, is a cornerstone of America's AI expansion efforts. In his second term, Trump has engaged closely with Silicon Valley leaders, including Jensen Huang, inviting him to the White House on multiple occasions. Huang has also advocated for loosening regulations on AI technology and restrictions on chip sales.
Jensen Huang has stated that President Trump frequently contacts him late at night to discuss AI, jobs, manufacturing, and national security. Reports have also surfaced regarding Trump's personal investments in Nvidia stock. However, the reported closeness of Huang to the president coincided with the U.S. intelligence community's growing scrutiny of his relationship with Alice Huang.
Investigations into Alice Huang's ties to Beijing concluded she was gathering intelligence for China and diverting Nvidia chips. Despite her continued surveillance, companies affiliated with her have reportedly continued to purchase Nvidia chips. Sources indicate that unlike some other top American business leaders targeted by foreign intelligence, Jensen Huang has not received defense briefings from the U.S. government concerning these matters.
Officials involved in the briefing to Trump last year reportedly did not believe Jensen Huang was aware of Alice Huang's alleged activities on behalf of Beijing. The pair were reportedly seen together in June 2024 at a bar in Taipei, following a technology trade show, and again in May 2025, leaving a restaurant in Taipei after a business dinner with AI suppliers. Pictures from the 2024 meeting were shared on LinkedIn by the company NetThunder.
A spokesperson for Nvidia stated that Jensen Huang's interactions with Alice Huang were typical for a CEO and that meetings with customers are a regular part of his job. The company expressed confidence that the U.S. government would notify them if any individual posed a threat to American industry. Megaspeed also stated that its current leadership is taking the allegations seriously and is conducting a thorough internal investigation with outside counsel, committing to full cooperation with the U.S. government.
