Students in Northern Ireland are set to receive their AS and A-level results on Thursday, August 15, starting at 8:00 AM BST. The results distribution occurs as the region's education system navigates broader reforms.
These reforms, part of a wider initiative known as TransformED and introduced by Education Minister Paul Givan, include changes to qualifications. Notably, CCEA will discontinue offering a separate AS-level qualification once the new A-level is implemented in 2029. This shift aligns with evolving educational standards and university admission requirements.
Recent years have seen a slight decrease in university applications from young people in Northern Ireland, according to the University and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). In 2022, 52.8% of 18-year-olds applied for university, a figure that fell to 49.1% by 2026. Alongside traditional university pathways, Higher Level Apprenticeships (HLAs) have gained popularity. These programs combine paid work with study, with over 2,100 students enrolled in HLA courses at Further Education colleges in Northern Ireland during the 2024/25 academic year, according to the Department of Economy.
Students seeking guidance on their results or future options can access support services. CCEA will operate a results helpline from August 13 to August 26 at 028 9026 1260. Additionally, the Department for the Economy's careers service offers an online advice service and can be reached by telephone at 0300 200 7820.
GCSE results for students in Northern Ireland are scheduled to be released on Thursday, August 20.
