A Northern California man has been sentenced to nearly 141 years to life in prison for fatally shooting a couple in front of their 4-year-old daughter in Eureka.

Russell Martin Albers, 45, received his sentence Thursday in Humboldt County Superior Court, approximately four years after the December 27, 2022, double homicide. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots and a child screaming at a Eureka residence. Upon arrival, deputies discovered three gunshot victims; two of them, identified as Jennifer Paddock and Danny Garcia, had died from their injuries. The young child was found unharmed at the scene.

According to court documents, Albers, the former boyfriend of Paddock, forced his way into the home and shot Paddock and Garcia. He also shot a family friend and his ex-girlfriend, who was subsequently driven to a hospital by Albers before he fled the scene.

Albers was apprehended the following day in McKinleyville, about a 20-minute drive from Eureka, after a high-speed police pursuit. Prior to his sentencing, Albers accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

During the sentencing hearing, family members delivered victim impact statements. One family member expressed hope that Albers would "die in prison." Judge Kelly Neel emphasized the severity of Albers' crimes, noting the opportunity he had to avoid his actions and highlighting that the murders occurred "in front of a baby."

Family members stated that the violence had a profound and generational impact, with one individual noting that Albers "robbed my niece of having her parents."
