Lando Norris clinched pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix after executing what he called "one of the best laps" of his career. The McLaren driver's performance came as a surprise, as he had been a considerable distance behind the pace-setters earlier in qualifying sessions.

Norris secured the top spot on the grid, ahead of Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli and Red Bull's Max Verstappen. He described the feeling of achieving pole as the adrenaline high from his final lap giving way to a state of flow, where "everything I wanted to achieve I achieved." He noted the difficulty of the new Madrid street circuit, which features tight corner entries and unforgiving walls, requiring drivers to remain relaxed despite the high-risk nature of the track. "It's easy to get tense around here," Norris commented.

The qualifying session, which had been anticipated to be fraught with incidents due to the circuit's challenging design and two red flags during final practice, ultimately ran without any major stoppages. While predictions suggested a battle for pole between Antonelli, the Ferraris, and Verstappen, Norris emerged as the unexpected frontrunner. The Ferraris, which had shown strong pace earlier, faded in the crucial final session.

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, who had a practice crash at the final corner and missed part of the session, improved his final lap but could not prevent himself from falling down the order. He ultimately qualified just 0.006 seconds behind Leclerc of Ferrari, who also missed out on a potential front-row start.
