North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) F-16 fighter jets intercepted multiple general aviation aircraft that violated temporary flight restrictions over Bedminster and East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday. More than 10 aircraft entered the restricted airspace, with NORAD conducting three intercepts.
During two of the intercepts, NORAD aircraft deployed flares to draw the pilots' attention. NORAD stated that the flares were deployed with a focus on safety, burn out quickly, and pose no danger to individuals on the ground.
All general aviation aircraft involved were safely escorted out of the area by NORAD aircraft. NORAD advised pilots to check Notice to Airmen (NOTAMS) and FAA Temporary Flight Restrictions before entering any airspace. Pilots encountering NORAD aircraft in restricted airspace are instructed to immediately communicate on frequency 121.5 or 243.0 and reverse course until further instructions are received.
The incidents occurred amid federal investigations into a series of drone encounters near New York-area airports, where drones have been observed flying illegally in restricted airspace.
