Nick Reiner is set to mark his 33rd birthday on Monday, September 14, behind bars at the Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility. He is being held without bail, awaiting trial for the alleged murders of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Reiner.
A representative for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department informed Page Six that birthdays are treated as ordinary days within the facility, with no special treatment or additional privileges granted to inmates.
Inmates have access to telephones and can receive visitors and mail according to standard schedules. Any birthday-related correspondence must adhere to the jail's normal mail inspection process and delivery timeline. Similarly, visits, whether in person or via video, are subject to the facility's regular schedule.
For his birthday meal, Reiner may purchase items from the jail's commissary list, which includes various snacks, candy, desserts, and beverages. Options range from Dolly Madison chocolate cupcakes to Mascots mini peanut butter cups.
This marks a stark contrast to Reiner's 22nd birthday in September 2015. He celebrated by attending the Toronto International Film Festival with his father for the premiere of "Being Charlie," a semi-autobiographical film co-written by Nick and inspired by his past struggles with drug addiction. Photos from that event show Nick and Rob Reiner smiling together, with Nick even receiving a birthday cake.
Rob and Michele Reiner were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood, California, home on December 14, 2025. Nick Reiner was arrested the same day and subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances. He had reportedly argued with his parents at a Christmas party the day before their deaths.
Nick Reiner has a documented history of drug addiction and was diagnosed with schizophrenia prior to the alleged killings. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, have not spoken to him since his arrest. Reiner is scheduled for a pretrial conference in court on Tuesday, September 15, one day after his birthday.
