Nick Reiner appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court Tuesday, facing charges for the December 2025 murders of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner. Reiner, 33, sat partially handcuffed beside his public defender, Kimberly Greene.

He wore a brown prison uniform and had a new look, with facial stubble and his previously short hair grown out and combed to the side. Reiner focused on Judge Sam Ohta and responded affirmatively when asked if he understood he was waiving his right to a speedy trial.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced outside the courthouse that his office would not seek the death penalty. "That means that the maximum sentence that Mr. [Nick] Reiner will be looking at is life without the possibility of parole," Hochman stated.

Hochman also noted that Nick's siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, had "expressed a strong desire for [the grand jury’s transcripts to remain sealed," adding that the court would make the final decision. The trial is not expected to occur before 2027.

Reiner's appearance comes two months after sources raised concerns about his condition, stating he was "rapidly deteriorating" while incarcerated at Los Angeles’ Twin Towers Correctional Facility. An indictment in August accused him of planning the murders, including the allegation of "lying in wait."

Reiner was arrested on December 14, 2025, shortly after his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home. He was initially charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances of multiple murders and personal use of a knife.

Reiner, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia before the killings and has a history of drug addiction, has pleaded not guilty to all charges. According to their death certificates, Rob and Michele Reiner died within minutes of receiving multiple sharp force injuries from a knife.

The night before their deaths, the couple had argued with Nick Reiner at a party hosted by Conan O’Brien.

Rob and Michele Reiner, married since 1989, also had two other children, Jake and Romy. Rob Reiner was previously married to Penny Marshall, with whom he adopted a daughter, Tracy Reiner.

In April, Jake Reiner shared an essay detailing the moment he learned of his parents' deaths, describing it as a "living nightmare."

Rob's sister, Annie Reiner, has remained supportive of her nephew throughout the legal proceedings.
