San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa returned to X, formerly Twitter, after a four-year hiatus to post an emoji seemingly in response to ESPN commentator Ryan Clark's recent firing.
Bosa's first original post since November 12, 2022, featured a "three fingers" emoji, often interpreted as signaling excellence, above a link to an article detailing Clark's dismissal from ESPN. The move has been widely interpreted as Bosa's endorsement of Clark's departure.
The apparent public exchange between the two stems from comments Clark made on his "The Pivot" podcast. Clark criticized Bosa for wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat during a postgame interview shortly before the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Clark questioned the sentiment behind the hat, stating, "What was so great about America before?"
Clark's criticisms continued, with him elaborating on the divisive nature of the "Make America Great Again" slogan and its association with negative rhetoric regarding people's backgrounds and skin color. He specifically stated, "There’s only one side that truly degrades and speaks negatively of the differences in other people, where they’re from, the colors of their skin."
Clark was fired by ESPN on Monday during a "NFL Live" appearance, with reports indicating the network wanted to inform him of the decision directly. His dismissal was part of broader layoffs at ESPN, which also affected other notable personalities, including MLB play-by-play announcer Karl Ravech and NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.
