The 2026 NFL season commenced with a Week 1 tribute to the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. At Lumen Field in Seattle, the league's opening game between the Seattle Seahawks and the visiting New England Patriots featured a pregame announcement acknowledging the 25th anniversary of the attacks.

"This weekend marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, the deadliest in our nation's history," the stadium announcement stated. "We now ask that you join us in a moment of silence in honor of those affected by the September 11th tragedy."

Following the moment of silence, the traditional national anthem was performed with a local interpretation. Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready delivered a guitar solo rendition of the anthem. The performance, described by NBC's Mike Tirico as "Authentically Seattle," deviated from the standard version.

The Seahawks also honored first responders who assisted in recovery efforts following the attacks. The pregame ceremonies concluded with a military flyover.

The NFL's Week 1 kickoff occurred ahead of games scheduled in Australia, as well as the upcoming Sunday and Monday night matchups.
