The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw for one game without pay following an incident during Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. The suspension was announced Monday by the league.
Greenlaw was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct after hitting Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold out of bounds near the Seahawks' sideline. The situation escalated when Greenlaw was surrounded by Seahawks players, and he then headbutted Ernest Jones, a Seahawks linebacker who had approached Greenlaw without his helmet.
Greenlaw will be eligible to return to the active roster on October 20, after the 49ers' game on October 19 against the Washington Commanders. The linebacker has the option to appeal the suspension under the league's collective bargaining agreement. If an appeal is filed, it would be heard by one of the league's designated hearing officers, all of whom are former NFL players.
This is not the first disciplinary action for Greenlaw. In the 2025 season, he was suspended after verbally threatening a referee following a game. He was also fined $11,941 for unsportsmanlike conduct last week after taunting the Denver Broncos' sideline and head coach Sean Payton. In 2023, Greenlaw was ejected from a game after an altercation with Philadelphia Eagles head of security Dom DiSandro.
