Carolina Panthers wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan is facing criticism after a youth football camp he was scheduled to attend in Asheville, North Carolina, on July 1 was canceled, leaving registered campers and their parents without the advertised NFL star and event.
Parents arrived at AC Reynolds High School for the camp, only to find no one present. According to the Asheville Citizen Times, emails were later sent to parents informing them of the cancellation and stating that their registrations had been transferred to a camp hosted by Panthers receiver Xavier Legette. However, Legette's camp was located in Charlotte, over two hours away from the original venue, and had reportedly already taken place in May.
Some parents told the publication that they never received any notification about the cancellation or the transfer.
FlexWork Sports Management, the company that advertised the camp, did not respond to requests for comment. A representative for McMillan stated that the camp had been canceled in February and that McMillan was not involved in the event's planning. The representative added that McMillan had been invited by FlexWork to attend but was unable to do so.
Chandler Greer, the football coach at Reynolds High School, informed the Citizen Times that the school was unaware of the camp until flyers were posted. The school attempted to contact FlexWork for more information but received no response. Greer also noted that Reynolds High had informed FlexWork that the school's field would not be available due to state athletics rules prohibiting facility access during a dead period in the North Carolina High School Athletics Association calendar.
A Facebook post from FlexWork on October 19, 2025, had advertised the July 1 camp for children aged six to 16, promising opportunities to "learn skills from Tetairoa" and to "get a pic with the star" and "get swag." Attendees reportedly paid $100 for tickets.
"We're really disappointed about the lack of information and communication," said Alyssa Kowalski, a parent from South Carolina whose son was registered for the camp. "You have all these children that are looking forward to seeing these players they look up to. It's very unfortunate you're letting their dreams go to waste."
Another parent, Jason Waldrup, indicated that he received an email about the cancellation in February, but it had gone to his spam folder. Other parents reported receiving the notice on various dates, many as late as May. When some parents checked their tickets on July 1, they noticed the information had been updated to reflect the Legette camp on May 17. Waldrup stated that his tickets did not show this change and still listed the McMillan camp at Reynolds.
Some parents took time off work and traveled to attend the event. A similar camp held at Reynolds High on June 20, hosted by RHS alum and Steelers running back Rico Dowdle, reportedly proceeded without issues.
