Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs has been placed on the NFL's Commissioner's Exempt List, a decision that sidelines him from all team activities as his off-field legal situation is investigated. The move comes after Jacobs was charged with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor criminal damage to property.
The charges stem from an alleged incident in May involving his girlfriend at his Wisconsin home. According to court documents, Jacobs is accused of grabbing his girlfriend and throwing her to the ground, causing her to strike her head. The dispute reportedly arose when the girlfriend accused him of communicating with other women. Prosecutors indicated that surveillance footage captured the alleged incident.
While on the Commissioner's Exempt List, Jacobs will continue to be paid but will not be permitted to practice or play for the Packers. His attorneys stated that the list is an administrative procedure and not a final determination, expressing Jacobs' respect for the NFL process and his anticipation of returning to the team.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur had previously indicated confidence in Jacobs remaining a member of the team despite the charges. Jacobs is not due in court until November 17.
Jacobs, who joined the Packers after five seasons with the Raiders, is a significant player for Green Bay. Last year, he accumulated 1,211 yards from scrimmage and 14 touchdowns. In 2022, he led the NFL with 1,653 rushing yards, surpassing 1,000 rushing yards in four career seasons.
In a related development, the Packers are reportedly in the process of trading for running back Kaleb Johnson from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Johnson, a third-round draft pick in 2025, had limited playing time during his rookie season.
