Millions of New Yorkers may be eligible for significant savings on their energy bills this winter through the state's Energy Affordability Program (EAP). The program offers financial relief to households that meet specific income criteria, with eligible residents potentially receiving discounts of up to $500 applied directly to their monthly utility costs.
Governor Kathy Hochul is encouraging eligible residents to enroll, stating that approximately 2.5 million New Yorkers are currently missing out on these savings. "I’m on a mission to help keep the lights on and costs down by launching an all-of-government push to get them enrolled in this money-saving program," Hochul said in a statement. "I encourage New Yorkers to take advantage of this opportunity by visiting NY.gov/EAP today."
While one million households are already participating in the EAP, an additional 2.5 million spots remain available. New Yorkers who believe they qualify can apply through their utility provider or by visiting the state's dedicated EAP website, NY.gov/EAP.
Eligibility for the EAP is based on household income relative to the state median income, or the area median income (AMI) for customers of Con Edison, National Grid Metro, or National Grid Long Island. The program was expanded in January, making more residents eligible for assistance.
