Jonathan McKinsey, 40, a New York Times executive, was fatally shot in Dublin, California, authorities said. His parents-in-law, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and other charges.
McKinsey, who served as the director of engineering for games player experience at The New York Times, was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in a car park at the Dublin Sports Grounds on Thursday afternoon. Police stated that McKinsey was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told KGO-TV that they heard a series of gunshots and then saw McKinsey on the ground. One witness described seeing the victim fall, bleeding from the head and chest, while another reported seeing the elderly couple walking away from the scene shortly after the incident.
The suspects were apprehended by an officer who was passing by the scene minutes after the shooting. They reportedly remained in the vicinity after the attack.
Zhang and Chen are facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, felony conspiracy, willful discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, and child endangerment. It remains unclear if they have retained legal counsel, and they are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday to formally face the charges.
The motive behind the killing has not yet been disclosed by the police. The couple are being held at the Santa Rita jail.
