New York City experienced a surge of violence late Monday, with at least four separate shootings reported across the boroughs. These incidents resulted in one fatality and several injuries, including a woman struck by a stray bullet.
In Brooklyn, a 32-year-old man was fatally shot in the head by a masked gunman around 8:30 p.m. in the Brownsville neighborhood. The shooting occurred on Bristol Street near Livonia Avenue, close to Betsy Head Park. Law enforcement sources indicated the suspect, wearing a black hoodie, fled into the park and had not been apprehended as of Tuesday. The motive for this shooting remains unclear, and it is unknown if the victim, Cleo Daniels, was targeted. State correction records show Daniels was released on parole in March 2023 after serving over four years for an attempted murder conviction.
Earlier in the evening, near the route of the city's West Indian Day Parade in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, a 24-year-old man was shot in the buttocks around 4 p.m. on Nostrand Avenue near St. Johns Place. The suspect in this shooting, 19-year-old Nayshawn Wilkinson, has been arrested. Authorities noted that Wilkinson was out on bail at the time of the incident, having been previously accused of firing a bullet that wounded a 15-year-old boy in July.
Shortly after 4 p.m. along the parade route, at the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Kingston Avenue, another man and a 37-year-old woman were shot. Both were reported to be in stable condition.
Later, around 11 p.m., a shooting in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx injured three people. A 65-year-old woman, believed to be an innocent bystander, was shot in the leg on University Avenue near Merriam Avenue. Also injured in this incident were a 43-year-old man, who sustained a gunshot wound to the head, and a 52-year-old woman, who was grazed in the leg. The man was reported in critical condition, while the two women were listed as stable. Law enforcement sources suggested this shooting may have been related to a drug dispute. Mé
