New York City's outdoor pools are scheduled to open for the summer season this Saturday at 11 a.m. Parks workers and maintenance crews have been working for weeks to complete final preparations, including scraping and repainting pool basins, repairing locker rooms, and testing filtration systems.
More than 50 outdoor pools are slated to open, with 51 of the city's 53 outdoor pools expected to be operational. Last year, the city's pools saw over 1 million visitors. Among the larger facilities are Crotona and Van Cortlandt pools in the Bronx, Astoria Pool in Queens, and the Gottesman Pool at the Davis Center in Manhattan. These Olympic-sized pools measure 50 meters in length and 25 meters in width.
Two pools will remain closed. The Haffen Pool in the Bronx is undergoing a $13.4 million reconstruction project that began in April. The Tony Dapolito Pool in Manhattan, known for its Keith Haring mural, is closed due to structural conditions and a planned reconstruction.
Most of the city's outdoor pools will remain open daily through September 13, while smaller mini-pools for children will close on September 7. The pools will operate daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a cleaning break between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. During declared heat emergencies, pool operating hours will be extended to 8 p.m.
