New Jersey Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell is reportedly the subject of an internal investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior toward women and potential ethics violations. The probe was initiated by Gov. Mikie Sherrill's office and is being overseen by former New Jersey Attorney General Christopher Porrino, according to multiple reports.

Porrino's team is currently interviewing witnesses and complainants. The investigation is also examining whether Caldwell inappropriately offered state jobs to individuals, as first reported by the New Jersey Globe.

A spokesperson for Gov. Sherrill stated that the governor "would take any reports of inappropriate behavior or misconduct extremely seriously and expects our public officials to hold themselves to the highest standards." The spokesperson declined to confirm or deny any potential personnel matters. Caldwell has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The investigation commenced approximately seven months after Sherrill and Caldwell were sworn into office. In July 2025, Sherrill described Caldwell as a "voice for the voiceless" and "committed to New Jersey" when she selected him as her running mate for the gubernatorial race.

Following reports of the investigation, New Jersey Republicans have called for Caldwell, who also serves as Secretary of State, to be placed on temporary leave. State Senate Republican leader Anthony Bucco stated on X that "Lt. Gov. Caldwell should temporarily step down from his duties as Lieutenant Governor" given the complex nature of his position.

Bucco characterized the allegations as "deeply concerning and disappointing" and expressed frustration that news of the investigation emerged shortly before the Labor Day weekend. "The public deserves transparency and timely information about matters of this magnitude," he said. "There are legitimate questions about why this information was not disclosed sooner and why we are just learning about this late on Friday heading into a holiday weekend."
