A software malfunction at the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission inadvertently added approximately 6,600 non-citizens to the state's voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024. Of those registered, hundreds cast ballots in state elections, Governor Mikie Sherrill announced Tuesday.
Sherrill stated that her office has commissioned an independent firm to investigate the error. The issue arose when individuals applying for driver's licenses or identification cards indicated they were not U.S. citizens but were nonetheless automatically registered to vote. The governor confirmed that while most of these individuals did not vote illegally, an estimated 400 did cast ballots.
The governor reported learning of the issue on July 15. She also mentioned receiving a letter from the Trump administration that alleged approximately 35,000 individuals may have been improperly registered. Sherrill noted that her office has requested evidence for the Trump administration's figure but has not yet received it.
"We have no evidence at this time that any elections were swayed," Sherrill said during a press conference. She also criticized former President Donald Trump's use of the New Jersey situation, stating that Trump has done more to undermine elections than anyone in her lifetime.
