The Gordie Howe International Bridge, a significant new crossing connecting the United States and Canada over the Detroit River, officially opened to trucks, cars, and other vehicles on Monday. The opening marks the culmination of a years-long construction project, though recent international trade disputes had recently cast a shadow over the endeavor.

Descendants of hockey legend Gordie Howe, for whom the bridge is named, were among the first to traverse the new span linking Detroit, Michigan, with Windsor, Ontario. U.S. Sen. Gary Peters and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer were also present for the opening.

The six-lane bridge was constructed by Canada at a cost of $6.4 billion Canadian. It is expected to provide a less expensive alternative to the privately owned Ambassador Bridge, which previously held a monopoly on heavy truck traffic carrying goods, particularly for the automotive industry, between the two countries. Thousands of trucks are estimated to use this route daily.

Jim Pereira, a trucker hauling auto parts, was recognized as the first to arrive in Detroit via the new bridge. He expressed anticipation for faster travel times on both sides of the border. "It’s just a beautiful piece of architecture," he remarked.

The bridge is designed to support the substantial trade volume between Ontario and Michigan, valued at $300 billion annually. Canadian infrastructure officials noted the bridge's design resembles a hockey stick blade, with steel cables forming structures akin to giant music harps.

Freddie Garrett, an 81-year-old Detroit resident, had followed the construction since the foundation was laid in 2018 and attended the opening to witness the first vehicles crossing. "It was amazing to see how they did it," he said, describing the section-by-section construction that met in the middle.

Last week, Canada held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the bridge in Windsor. However, U.S. and Michigan representatives were reportedly uninvited following a sudden announcement by President Donald Trump of 50% tariffs on Canadian goods entering the United States. More than 70% of Canada's exports go to the U.S., which is its largest trade partner. Detroit serves as the primary port for truck traffic on the U.S.-Canada border.

Business professionals in the region have noted that political tensions between the two governments have created challenges. Kevin Ketels, a business professor specializing in supply chain management at Wayne State University, described the current animosity as "unneeded and unnecessary."

The bridge spans 1.5 miles and reaches a height of 151 feet above the river. Pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to use the bridge for free beginning August 5.

Gordie Howe, known as "Mr. Hockey," played for the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, wearing the No. 9 during his career. He passed away in 2016.

Under a recent agreement between Canada and the Trump administration, Canada will share some toll revenue with the U.S. government for 15 years. Michigan had previously negotiated a separate revenue share for the state in 2012, but its payment is contingent on Canada recovering its construction costs, a process expected to take decades.
