Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has declared a state of emergency for Washoe County as the Hawk Fire rapidly expanded to over 10,500 acres outside Reno on Saturday. The fast-moving brush fire is threatening approximately 1,000 homes, prompting evacuations in the affected areas. Strong, gusty winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames, according to the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.

Approximately 400 firefighters and personnel from local, state, and federal agencies were engaged in firefighting efforts on Saturday evening, utilizing both ground crews and aerial support. Three helicopters were scheduled to operate overnight to aid in protecting homes and other properties.

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve urged residents in evacuation zones to leave immediately, stating that structures had already been damaged by the fire. She emphasized that residents' lives are more important than buildings and that leaving promptly allows firefighters to concentrate on combating the blaze rather than conducting rescues.

Officials ordered new evacuations for the Somersett community, specifically areas north of Somersett Parkway to Robb Drive, as well as neighborhoods north of West 7th Street to North McCarran Boulevard. An additional 1,000 homes were placed in a "Warning — GET SET" zone, indicating residents should be prepared to evacuate.

Governor Lombardo stated that the fire posed a threat to homes and other structures, describing the situation as active and rapidly evolving. He urged those in affected areas to remain vigilant and follow the guidance of local officials.

Authorities were also closely monitoring the fire's proximity to a Washoe County correctional facility. Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam confirmed that his office was collaborating with fire and emergency crews and was prepared to respond if conditions changed, prioritizing the safety of incarcerated individuals and staff.
