Nearly 500 migrants arrived in the United Kingdom on Thursday, crossing the English Channel in seven small boats. This marks the first day of such crossings since August 17, following a 10-day lull.
These arrivals represent a continuation of a trend where small boats have become the most common method for individuals detected entering the UK illegally. Between January 1 and August 25, 2026, approximately 15,897 people made the crossing from France, a 45% decrease compared to the same period the previous year. The majority of those arriving by small boat claim asylum, which, under international law, allows them to remain in the UK while their applications are processed. Small boat arrivals accounted for 40% of all asylum applications between July 2025 and June 2026.
The average number of people per boat has more than doubled since 2021, with boats arriving between August 26, 2025, and August 25, 2026, carrying an average of 68 individuals. Experts note that overcrowded conditions in these vessels increase the risks associated with the journey. In 2024 alone, at least 84 individuals died while attempting to cross the Channel, according to United Nations data.
While these small boat crossings are a prominent issue, they represent about 5% of the total immigration into the UK between January and December 2025. The UK government has stated its commitment to combating the organized crime groups responsible for facilitating these crossings.
Among the nationalities arriving by small boat, Eritrean nationals constituted 18% of all arrivals between July 2025 and June 2026. In the period from January to December 2025, at least 2,335 individuals arriving by small boat were identified by the Home Office as potential victims of human trafficking or modern slavery.
Beyond small boat crossings, other methods of irregular entry are also detected. Between July 2025 and June 2026, 4,712 individuals were found entering the UK without authorization through means such as hiding in vehicles or traveling via ferries and airports. This figure was down 17% from the prior year. Additionally, some individuals enter the UK legally on visas and subsequently overstay their permitted duration, though the total number of such cases is not precisely known.
