The National Border Patrol Council, the largest union representing Border Patrol officers, has endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for the U.S. Senate. The union previously endorsed Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, in the Republican primary.
Paul Perez, president of the National Border Patrol Council, stated that the union is "proud" to endorse Paxton because he "will continue fighting for the resources, policies, and leadership our agents need to keep America’s borders secure." Perez added that Paxton "stands with the men and women of the National Border Patrol Council who are on the frontlines protecting our borders, and he has always fought to uphold the rule of law."
This endorsement comes as Paxton consolidates support within the GOP following a competitive primary. According to a recent poll from The New York Times/Siena, Democratic candidate James Talarico is currently tied with Paxton at 47% support among likely Texas voters. The potential for Talarico to flip a Texas Senate seat is seen as a significant challenge for Republicans aiming to maintain their majority in the Senate.
Paxton, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, filed over 100 lawsuits against the Biden administration, many of which concerned border security, given Texas's substantial portion of the U.S. southern border. Paxton responded to the endorsement by expressing honor and stating his commitment to ensuring "President Trump’s border security agenda is fully implemented, funded, and never undermined by partisan politics."
In contrast, Talarico, a former middle school teacher, has emerged as a significant fundraiser for the Democratic party, raising $27 million in the first three months of the year. Republicans have highlighted past controversial statements made by Talarico, including remarks on gender and religion. Paxton has criticized Talarico, suggesting he is not a suitable fit for Texas.
