Michael Jordan's NASCAR team, 23XI Racing, will not have prospect Corey Heim contend for Rookie of the Year in his first full-time season due to a controversial ruling by the racing organization. Heim is set to join the Cup Series with 23XI Racing in 2027, but his prior race starts disqualify him from the award.

Heim has already secured two victories this season in a part-time capacity for 23XI Racing, including the Brickyard 400. He is scheduled to replace Riley Herbst in the team's third car next year, joining teammates Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace. His prior appearances have now made him ineligible for the Rookie of the Year award.

NASCAR's vice president of racing communications, Mike Forde, clarified the new criteria on the Hauler Talk podcast. Drivers are now limited to a maximum of 12 Cup Series starts before declaring for Rookie of the Year consideration. Additionally, there are benchmarks of 10 starts in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Series and Craftsman Truck Series.

Heim has made 15 Cup Series starts since 2024 and is expected to make four more before his full-time debut. Although he could have been eligible for this year's award, he did not apply. Consequently, Connor Zilisch will win the award by default as the sole contender. For Heim to have been considered, 23XI Racing would have needed to apply on his behalf, a request that would be denied under the current rules.

Previously, NASCAR reviewed eligibility on a case-by-case basis. Forde explained that the criteria have evolved over time, noting a shift from discretionary reviews to more defined numerical parameters. This change aims to simplify the process and avoid confusion regarding drivers with extensive prior experience.

Despite the ineligibility for the Rookie of the Year award, Heim, 24, has already achieved significant milestones. He is the first driver in the modern era to win multiple Cup Series races within his first 15 starts.

Discussions are also ongoing regarding Heim's car number for his rookie season. While he has driven the No. 67 for his two wins this year, he had been slated to switch to the No. 35, currently driven by Herbst. However, his recent success in the No. 67 has prompted reconsideration.

Heim's career trajectory has accelerated significantly this season, marked by his decision to commit to 23XI Racing and Toyota amidst high demand. He has spoken about his relationship with team co-owner Michael Jordan, describing him as a supportive and down-to-earth figure who is actively involved with the team.
