NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman attended a scheduled launch Tuesday of a U.S.-Russian crew to the International Space Station, a demonstration of ongoing orbital cooperation between the United States and Russia despite significant geopolitical tensions.

Isaacman's visit to the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, leased by Russia, represents the first time a NASA administrator has visited the site in eight years. During a meeting with the crew on Monday, Isaacman expressed gratitude to Russia's state space corporation, Roscosmos, for its preparation efforts, stating that "the integrated work performed over the past several months reflects the professionalism and dedication of everyone involved."

He also met with Roscosmos head Dmitry Bakanov prior to the liftoff of NASA astronaut Anil Menon and Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina. The trio was slated to embark on an eight-month mission aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-29 to the International Space Station. This mission marks Menon's inaugural spaceflight, while Dubrov and Kikina are on their second missions.

Upon arrival, the new crew members will join NASA astronauts Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, and Chris Williams, European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergei Kud-Sverchkov, Sergei Mikaev, and Andrei Fedyaev aboard the station.

Historically, Russia and the U.S. have collaborated on space station operations and other projects, a partnership that dates back to the Cold War era rivalry. This relationship faced strain following Russia's military actions in Ukraine in 2022. Nevertheless, both nations have sustained their cooperation, ensuring that U.S. and Russian crews continue to travel to the orbiting outpost utilizing each country's spacecraft.

Broader collaborative initiatives, such as potential Russian participation in NASA's Artemis program for lunar exploration, have not materialized. As Russia has increasingly aligned with China for energy exports and critical technology imports due to Western sanctions, Roscosmos has initiated cooperation with China on its own lunar missions.
