A naked college swimmer has been charged with murder following an alleged overnight attack that resulted in the death of a security guard at a Hawaiian resort. Legend Storer, 20, a student-athlete at Concordia University Irvine, faces charges in connection with the death of Michael Dyer, 63, at the Sands of Kahana resort in Maui on August 7.
Surveillance footage reportedly captured Storer, unclothed, entering the security guard's office around 1:45 a.m. Dyer was on his lunch break at the time and was allegedly attacked by Storer, who is accused of using a five-gallon water bottle as a weapon. Dyer, who was married, was pronounced dead at the scene when first responders arrived around 5:30 a.m. after receiving a report of an unresponsive individual.
Storer reportedly fled the resort without being detected but was apprehended approximately two hours later in a nearby neighborhood, reportedly behaving erratically and clad only in his birthday suit. Residents in the area recalled hearing distressed shouting during the night, with one witness describing it as "crazy" and containing religious exclamations.
Following his arrest, Storer was found to have abrasions and was taken to a hospital for evaluation. Police connected him to Dyer's death after reviewing the resort's security footage. He has been charged with second-degree murder, burglary with a dangerous instrument, and indecent exposure. Storer pleaded not guilty to the charges during a court appearance on Friday.
He was denied bail and is being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center. A judge cited concerns about Storer's appearance in court and the safety of the community as reasons for denying bail.
Storer, a decorated swimmer, attended the University of Hawaii after a year at Concordia University Irvine. During his time at Maui Prep, he was a two-time Maui Interscholastic champion. Hawaii News Now reported that Storer may face enhanced penalties under a 2021 law that increased punishments for crimes against seniors, or kupuna, who are 60 years or older. Dyer was 63 at the time of his death.
