Former UK Member of Parliament Nadine Dorries has detailed her approach to managing weight loss, particularly during periods she finds challenging, such as the summer holidays and significant life disruptions. Dorries, who previously lost over two and a half stone using the weight-loss injection Mounjaro, explained her decision to use a low dose of the medication to maintain her results.
Dorries stated that after stopping her Mounjaro injections in October of the previous year, she aimed to maintain her weight through diet and exercise alone. She noted that while this was manageable most of the time, the festive season and summer holidays presented significant challenges due to increased social events and travel.
Navigating Social and Personal Disruptions
During a period of extensive renovation on her cottage, Dorries described a chaotic lifestyle that disrupted her usual meal planning and routine. The lack of a functional kitchen led to frequent reliance on coffee shops and restaurants, contributing to weight gain. She observed that her jeans became tight, and her Body Mass Index (BMI) indicated she had moved back into the overweight category. This realization prompted her to seek a solution to regain control before her weight issues escalated and potentially impacted her health, referencing past struggles with pre-diabetes, high cholesterol, and fatty deposits on her liver.
Dorries' strategy shift occurred after a spa day with friends, one of whom had successfully maintained significant weight loss by using a micro-dose of Mounjaro. This friend, advised by her doctor to take 2.5mg, found that a 1.5mg weekly dose was sufficient for weight maintenance while reducing costs. She explained that this regimen helped manage her food intake, with smaller portions consumed for a few days after injection, and normal portions leading up to the next dose.
Resuming Mounjaro for Maintenance
Inspired by her friend's success, Dorries discussed the possibility with her doctor, who agreed to prescribe Mounjaro due to her return to the overweight BMI category. She began her first maintenance dose before a family holiday, finding it effective in curbing temptations associated with travel and disrupted routines.
Dorries expressed a belief that weight-loss medications like Mounjaro should be accessible for individuals seeking to manage smaller weight increases, not just those clinically classified as overweight or obese. She drew a parallel to over-the-counter access for medications like Viagra, questioning the more stringent requirements for weight-loss treatments for women. Dorries concluded that using a low dose of Mounjaro for a few weeks allows her to address a potential weight problem early, avoiding more significant issues later and enabling her to achieve her goal weight of 8st 7lb by October 2026.
