A pregnant mother in east Hertfordshire is dealing with the aftermath of a suspected opioid poisoning that has left one of her cats dead and several others critically ill, according to reports.
The mother, identified as Courtney, also experienced illness, including a temporary loss of sight, after her pets were exposed to what is believed to be a substance containing heroin, potentially sprayed around her home. Her two young children also fell ill with headaches and upset stomachs and were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, but have since returned home.
The incident began when Courtney noticed one of her cats unable to move on a Monday evening. By the early hours of Tuesday, five of her eight cats were seriously ill, exhibiting distress and seizures. Her medical alert dog, Pickles, also fell ill shortly after being in the garden and was initially in critical condition but has since recovered. Another cat was found critically ill under a car.
One cat, named Bean, died following the incident. Only one of Courtney's pets, a cat that remained indoors, was unaffected.
Courtney has been informed by veterinarians that the animals are suffering from opioid poisoning. She has incurred significant veterinary bills, with the practice capping her payable amount at £4,500 out of an estimated £15,500.
Hertfordshire Police confirmed they are investigating the circumstances of the reported exposure of pet animals to a substance. A 32-year-old woman was arrested in connection with the incident and has since been released on bail pending further inquiries. Officers have been collaborating with partner authorities to establish the details of the incident. The area around Courtney's home has not yet been declared safe, preventing her and her children from leaving the property.
Courtney described the situation as 'horrendous,' with her daughter experiencing nightmares. She praised the support from her veterinarians and stated that any funds raised beyond her veterinary costs would be donated to the clinic.
