A single mother of six, Smaah Adam, 46, was killed in a hit-and-run collision Monday evening in Spokane, Washington, after a driver struck her and fled the scene.
Police were called to the intersection of Maxwell Avenue and Walnut Street around 5:30 p.m. following a report of a car crash. Adam, a chef at the nonprofit Feast World Kitchen, was found in critical condition and later died at a local hospital. Investigators, reviewing surveillance footage, believe a black SUV was involved in the incident. No person of interest has been identified.
Feast World Kitchen, an organization that supports immigrant and refugee chefs, is mourning Adam's death. Co-founder Ross Carper described Adam as being like family and expressed frustration that the person responsible has not yet been held accountable. "It's been really hard to know that the person responsible for this is still not being held accountable, that they haven't been able to make an arrest, and that those kids and Smaah deserve closure and accountability," Carper told KXLY.
Carper explained that Adam, originally from Egypt, came to the United States over a decade ago, having fled violence and war. She had been cooking at Feast World Kitchen for more than five years, and three of her children were also participants in the program.
Feast World Kitchen has initiated a fundraising campaign on GiveCloud to cover funeral expenses and support Adam's six children. The organization shared a statement on Instagram, saying, "Rest in peace, my sister. May Allah grant you Jannah and give us the strength to care for your six beloved children and everyone you left behind."
The Spokane police department has been contacted for further updates on the investigation.
