A fatal boat capsize in New York Harbor on Saturday night claimed the lives of Sara Sanchez, 27, and her infant daughter, Antonella Garcia, prompting a wave of support for her grieving husband, Andres Garcia. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to aid Garcia, who lost his wife and their 5-month-old child.
Photos show Sanchez with her husband and their 6-year-old son, Salvador, who was not on the boat. The child's birthday is scheduled for this week. One image depicts a pregnant Sanchez posing with her husband and son.
"Our friend and colleague Andres Garcia experienced a loss that no husband or father should ever have to endure," reads the description for the fundraising page. "Those of us who know and work with Andres want to come together around him and their son during the most difficult time of their lives."
Sanchez, her infant daughter, and 12 other individuals were aboard the motorboat when it overturned near Liberty Island shortly before 10:30 p.m. Saturday. The vessel was reportedly overcrowded.
Authorities arrested the captain, identified as Manuel Hernandez, on suspicion of operating an illegal charter company. He now faces federal charges.
A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers crane vessel was seen lifting the overturned boat from the harbor on Sunday, August 9, 2026.
