Obituaries for the eight members of a family killed in a recent mass shooting near Billings, Montana, reveal the depth of grief and the profound emptiness left by the tragedy. The victims, who were all part of the same family, included a 92-year-old great-grandmother, her son and daughter-in-law, and five children and grandchildren.
The victims have been identified as Evelyn Smith, 92; Dana Smith, 73; Barbara Smith, 72; Megan Ireland-Ghekiere, 39; Landon Ghekiere, 15; Owen Ireland, 13; Charlotte Ghekiere, 12; and Chloe Ireland, 7.
Acts of Bravery and Love
Among the most poignant tributes is the obituary for Charlotte Ghekiere, 12, the youngest victim. Her obituary states that "In her final moments, Charlotte’s bravery was evident as she made a call that likely saved the lives of first responders, if not her family." It further describes her as having "genuine curiosity about the world" and being "fearless" in her beliefs, noting that her passing "leaves a profound emptiness."
Charlotte’s brother, Landon Ghekiere, 15, was remembered as "thoughtful, affectionate, sarcastic, witty, and intelligent." His obituary highlights his anticipation for his sophomore year of high school, obtaining his driver's license, and acquiring a passport. It also states that his life was "heartbreakingly cut short as he heroically protected his little sister."
Megan Ireland-Ghekiere, 39, was described as "a wonderful mom who found the perfect balance between being fun, loving and a guiding presence for her children." Her obituary emphasizes that "Owen and Chloe were the center of her world, and she loved them with everything she had." It concludes, "Their lives mattered, their love mattered, and the space they leave behind will never be filled."
Community Mourning
Dana Smith, 73, and Barbara Smith, 72, were mourned by their former classmates from Laramie High School, where they had recently attended their 55th reunion in July. A tribute on a local Laramie Facebook group noted the shared disbelief and grief between Billings and Laramie.
The massacre, which police say was carried out by Barbara and Dana’s 44-year-old son, Alan Smith, has left the Billings community struggling to comprehend the scale of the tragedy. Authorities stated that Alan Smith shot his family members before setting fire to the house and taking his own life in the backyard.
A community fundraiser has been organized by local radio DJ Justin Hutchinson to support the affected family members. A week of events is planned from September 28 to October 4.
"Billings is a helpful town," Hutchinson told the Billings Gazette. "Having a fundraiser night for these families just comes naturally to so many. Everyone always wants to be part of the good in our community."
