While awaiting trial for the stabbing death of her boyfriend, Christian Obumseli, model Courtney Clenney filed a series of grievances with prison officials, detailing demands for creature comforts and expressing dissatisfaction with her appearance behind bars. Clenney, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a deadly weapon and is serving a sentence of six years in state prison, claimed she was a victim of abuse when she stabbed Obumseli in their Miami condo in April 2022.
Prison records obtained by the Daily Mail reveal Clenney's complaints focused on issues such as the availability of hair and makeup, the fit of her prison-issued clothing, and the quality of food. She reportedly expressed frustration at having to appear in court without makeup and with unruly hair, requesting cosmetics be added to the jail commissary. Clenney also wrote to supervisors about the unflattering nature of her prison garments, stating that her uniforms were loose and fell off her hips. She alleged that she was being targeted due to her body type or race, leading to uncomfortable sexualization by staff.
One exchange detailed in the records involved a corrections officer reportedly telling Clenney, "We don't need to see all that thickness," in response to her request for a smaller uniform. Clenney perceived this and other comments as unprofessional and inappropriate.
Beyond her appearance, Clenney lodged grievances about various aspects of prison life. These included issues with bedding, meals, faulty vending machines, and the availability of personal items like tampons and painkillers. She also complained about a lack of access to music, a popped basketball, missing exercise mats, and poor Wi-Fi signals that disrupted video visits. Clenney even demanded a refund after a vending machine malfunctioned.
Clenney also raised concerns about her safety, writing that her highly publicized case and media portrayal put her at a higher risk of being attacked by other inmates. She reported instances of inmates challenging her to fights, removing her earbuds, and calling her derogatory names. In one instance, she complained about a cellmate targeting her due to her case and skin color, a claim authorities dismissed, noting the case was over three years old.
Clenney's defense attorneys portrayed her as a victim of domestic violence, claiming she acted in self-defense. However, Obumseli's family maintained that Clenney was the aggressor in their relationship. Surveillance footage from months before his death showed Clenney repeatedly punching and clawing at Obumseli in an elevator, while he appeared to be pushing her away.
In August 2026, Clenney accepted a plea deal, reducing her potential sentence. She is currently being held at a Women's Reception Center in Ocala, Florida, with her final prison assignment pending. Factoring in time served, she is expected to be released in approximately two years. Her attorney stated that the plea was in her best interest, not an admission of guilt, and that her actions were taken to save her life from an abuser.
