Mitch McConnell Appears to Struggle During Senate Committee Meeting

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell appeared to struggle with speaking and follow instructions during a Senate Agriculture Committee meeting on Wednesday, according to reports. The 84-year-old Republican, who recently returned to Capitol Hill after a more than 90-day absence, was seen being prompted by colleagues regarding a vote during a markup of the Farm Bill.

McConnell's return to the committee meeting on September 16, 2026, marked his first public appearance in nearly three months. He had been recovering at home in Washington D.C. following a fall on June 14th, which led to a brief hospitalization. The fall and subsequent recovery have been part of a series of health issues that have affected the senator during his final term.

During the meeting, McConnell was reportedly told by fellow lawmakers when it was time to vote and what vote to cast. He had served as the GOP leader in the U.S. Senate for nearly two decades before stepping down from leadership roles in January 2023. His current absence from public view had raised concerns about his health and ability to continue serving.
