A Missouri deputy attorney general, Shaun Mackelprang, 55, has been found alive after disappearing for six days while on a solo hike in Wyoming's Wind River mountain range. Mackelprang was located on Wednesday morning and extracted by helicopter, according to the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office.

Mackelprang began his hike from the Green River Lakes trailhead on August 20, with the goal of summiting Gannett Peak, the state's highest point. He signed the register at the summit of the 13,804-foot mountain on August 21. His original plan was to return by August 24, but poor weather conditions on the mountain initially led his family to believe he was simply delayed.

His family reported him missing on Monday, August 26, after becoming increasingly concerned. A comprehensive search effort was launched, involving ground search teams, the sheriff's office drone team, and the helicopter of the nonprofit organization Tip Top Search and Rescue. The search was aided by the fact that Mackelprang had signed the summit register.

Mackelprang was found near a lake in the Wind River mountain range. His brother, Romel, stated that Mackelprang was dehydrated and disoriented when located. He received an IV and was subsequently airlifted to a local medical facility for evaluation. Photos released by the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office show Mackelprang appearing to be in good condition after his rescue, embracing his sister, Sheila.

Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway released a statement expressing gratitude for the efforts of the search and rescue teams and relief at Mackelprang's safe return. Romel Mackelprang also conveyed his deep appreciation for the authorities and volunteers involved in the rescue.

According to his brother, Mackelprang was climbing Gannett Peak as part of a personal goal to summit the highest peak in all 50 U.S. states. Gannett Peak was the 45th state high point he has successfully conquered.
