Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., announced Wednesday that he will not seek to lead House Republicans in the next Congress, his decision coming after Democratic victories significantly diminished the party's majority.

Johnson revealed his intention during an all-staff call, according to two sources familiar with the announcement. The development follows House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, stating his intention to run for minority leader.

Johnson's tenure as speaker began in October 2023, when he ascended to the role after the ouster of then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. His rise to the gavel was seen as a rapid ascent from relative obscurity.
