Mike Golic, preparing for his return to ESPN with his son for a new show titled "The Golics," has spoken about his current relationship with former "Mike & Mike" co-host Mike Greenberg. The pair's long-running ESPN Radio show concluded in 2017 after a 17-year run, and Golic described the separation as not having ended well.
"It did not end well," Golic told Sports Illustrated, referencing the documented tensions surrounding the show's conclusion. "But somewhat like my football career, when I got cut by the Houston Oilers and went to the Philadelphia Eagles, I didn’t reminisce about the Houston Oilers. I was playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. The same thing when I left Philadelphia to go to Miami. You move on and you study the task at hand."
Regarding his current connection with Greenberg, Golic stated, "As far as the relationship with Greeny, we don’t keep in touch much in all honesty, but occasionally we’ll check in." He noted that these check-ins primarily focus on their children, as both hosts' families grew during their time on "Mike & Mike." Golic described the interactions as "cordial."
Greenberg departed "Mike & Mike" in 2017 to host "Get Up," after which Golic partnered with Trey Wingo for "Golic and Wingo" until 2020. Golic Sr. is returning to ESPN after a six-year absence from the network, where he previously worked from 1995 to 2020.
Both former co-hosts had previously expressed frustration that news of their program's dissolution became public before they had the opportunity to announce it themselves. Golic characterized the year and a half leading up to the show's end as "eyebrow-raising" and the uncertainty about its future as the "worst-kept secret for a long time."
Greenberg had previously commented on this aspect of the breakup, saying, "It would’ve been nice if we had been the ones to tell our audience that we were going to be going on to do separate things. Instead, the overwhelming majority of our audience had already heard that by the time we were ready to tell them. That was the part that bothered me."
Golic mentioned that Greenberg texted him about his return to ESPN and expressed happiness for him and his son, Mike Golic Jr., further indicating a cordial, albeit infrequent, communication between the two.
