A migrant who fled Ireland following the killing of American Jamey Carney has been arrested in Jordan, according to Irish media reports. The Jordanian Public Security Directorate detained the individual within the past 48 hours after learning he had returned to the country and was the focus of an ongoing murder investigation by Irish police.
Irish police confirmed they are aware of the arrest of a male in Jordan by Jordanian authorities but have not identified the individual or confirmed his status as the person of interest in the investigation. Irish police also stated they have not yet made any request to Jordanian authorities for the arrest of any person.
Ireland does not have an extradition treaty with Jordan, where the man is currently being held.
Jamey Carney, 43, a New York native who relocated to Ireland in 2021, was found dead at her home in Killarney, County Kerry. Detectives believe she died from suffocation after sustaining head injuries. The town of Killarney is a popular tourist destination.
Authorities believe Carney was killed around 11 p.m. on a Monday, with her body discovered by her 13-year-old daughter the following afternoon. By the time her body was found, the individual had reportedly traveled by bus to Dublin Airport and boarded a flight to Istanbul.
Reports indicate that the man had been refused asylum in Ireland but remained in the country while appealing the decision. He is said to have possessed his passport, which allowed him to leave Ireland before Carney's body was discovered.
The individual arrived in Ireland in 2024 and reportedly worked in the hospitality and construction sectors before becoming involved in a relationship with Carney. He had been living in state-run accommodation for asylum seekers in Killarney before spending more time at Carney's home.
Irish media outlets have identified the man as the person police are seeking, though authorities have not publicly confirmed his identity or immigration status. Carney's social media showed her with a man she identified as her partner, referring to them as a "mixed couple."
Because Carney was an American citizen, an Irish police request to Interpol will be monitored by the U.S. National Central Bureau, which serves as the U.S. liaison to Interpol. The FBI has stated it stands ready to assist Irish authorities if requested.
