Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin indicated Thursday that the Democratic Party may need new leadership, suggesting that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries should consider stepping down.
Slotkin stated during an appearance on SiriusXM’s “Straight Shooter with Stephen A” that the party has not “fully recovered” since its “soundly defeated” performance in 2024. She argued that Democrats have struggled due to an overabundance of priorities, attempting to please too many groups and failing to present a clear, unified message.
"When you prioritize everything, no one knows what you actually stand for,” Slotkin told host Stephen A. Smith. She contrasted this with former President Donald Trump’s approach, noting, “He came in with one clear message. He said, ‘I’m going to make your life more affordable. I’m going to put more money in your pocket.’ … He won because he kept his message simple and focused on the issue Americans cared most about.”
The senator expressed frustration that debates about the party's direction continue over a year and a half after the 2024 election. “That’s why I believe we need significant new leadership,” she asserted. “The old models are no longer working, and that includes the Democratic Party.”
Slotkin characterized the internal party dynamic as a “circular firing squad,” where members react to crises but seldom articulate clear goals. “To me, that’s a fundamental failure of leadership,” she added.
When pressed by Smith on whether she was specifically calling for Schumer and Jeffries to be replaced, Slotkin responded, “I’m saying that if people can’t recognize that the game has fundamentally changed and can’t adapt, then they need to make room for others who can.”
Recent losses by two incumbent Democrats to candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani have also raised questions about Jeffries' influence within the party. Representatives for Schumer and Jeffries did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
