Michigan Democrat Endorses Key Trump Economic Policies

Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., has expressed support for several economic policies championed by the Trump administration, identifying areas where she believes bipartisan collaboration is possible. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Stevens endorsed the concept of public stakes in high-growth industries, loan guarantees for critical mineral extraction, and the Trump administration's Ratepayer Protection Pledge aimed at lowering energy costs amidst AI infrastructure development.

Stevens pointed to the administration's strategy of securing direct equity stakes in strategically important industries as a model for potentially funding healthcare and infrastructure programs. She cited examples such as the administration's investment in Intel and the Pentagon's stake in rare-earth producer MP Materials, noting these investments have increased in value.

"It's not just about taxation," Stevens stated when asked about revenue generation. "If federal dollars are used, like what Mr. Elon Musk got from the federal government, so potentially this current administration could be right that ownership stakes should be on the table."

While advocating for the wealthiest to contribute more in taxes, Stevens emphasized her belief in bipartisan cooperation. She highlighted her work on a bipartisan auto-rescue task force during the Obama administration as an example of successful collaboration at the local and federal levels.

The congresswoman also voiced strong support for increasing domestic production of critical minerals, arguing that the United States is made vulnerable to China by its current reliance on foreign sources. She specifically mentioned loan guarantees for mining firms as a policy she backs, aligning with a current Trump administration initiative.

Beyond economic policy, Stevens indicated that standing up to national adversaries and bolstering American manufacturing are other avenues for bipartisan efforts. She noted her role as the bipartisan caucus chair of the manufacturing caucus.

Her remarks come amidst a complex political landscape, including her previous endorsement of Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan's Senate primary, despite their ideological differences. Stevens, who positioned herself as a moderate during her primary contest, has stated that while she may find common ground with former President Trump on specific economic issues, she views his broader agenda as detrimental to the country.

A White House spokesperson criticized Stevens' stance, pointing to her voting record against the Trump administration in Congress. Despite these criticisms, Stevens maintains that collaboration across the aisle, particularly on local and economic issues, remains a priority.
