A couple in St. Clair Shores, Michigan, has been charged with allegedly throwing an explosive device with the message "BYE BYE" into their elderly neighbor's yard. Jason Showers, 45, and Megan Showers, 38, face multiple felony charges, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutors stated that Megan Showers ignited the explosive, described as a red, cylindrical device, before Jason Showers hurled it into the yard of their 72-year-old neighbor. The neighbor was reportedly able to extinguish the device.
Law enforcement officials searched the couple's home and discovered firearms, ammunition, and materials used for assembling explosive devices. Jason and Megan Showers are each charged with placing explosives near property and possessing bombs with unlawful intent. Each of these felonies carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.
Additional charges against Jason Showers include being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and ammunition, with each offense punishable by up to five years in prison. He also faces two counts of felony firearm possession, each carrying a mandatory consecutive two-year sentence if convicted.
Due to Jason Showers having at least four prior felony convictions, he could face a life sentence if convicted of any of the top charges, prosecutors said.
The couple appeared in court on Wednesday. Jason Showers was granted a $100,000 cash-only bond but remains in the Macomb County Jail. If released, he would be required to wear a GPS tether and is prohibited from returning to his home or contacting his wife or the neighbor.
Megan Showers' bond was set at $20,000, with the option to pay 10% through a bail bondsman. She is permitted to return to her home but is prohibited from contacting her husband or the neighbor.
Their probable cause hearing is scheduled for August 14.
