Michelle Obama honored her late mother, Marian Robinson, at a stakeholders event for the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago this Tuesday. Robinson, who died in May 2024 at the age of 86, had moved into the White House to assist the Obamas with raising their daughters. Michelle Obama, 62, wore a skirt featuring a sepia photograph of her mother during the event.
Presidential Library Faces Multiple Challenges
The Obama Presidential Center, with an $850 million price tag, is scheduled for its grand opening this Friday. However, the project is embroiled in controversy, including allegations from contractors of unpaid invoices. Omar Shareef, president of the African American Contractors Association, stated that seven subcontractors have sought his assistance in securing payments, with some facing losses of up to seven figures. Lakeside Alliance, the general contractor, acknowledged that contractual closeout processes, including invoice resolution, often extend beyond the facility's opening.
The library's design has also drawn criticism. Pastor Todd Friel has labeled the 225-foot-tall structure, sometimes referred to as the 'Obamalisk,' as 'anti-Christian' and aesthetically unappealing. Friel suggested the design reflects deconstructivist principles, which he associated with atheism, postmodernism, and Marxist ideology, contrasting it with traditional architecture that he believes affirms order.
The project's cost has significantly exceeded its initial $300 million budget, with the pandemic cited as a factor in delays and increased expenses. Additional financial strain has arisen from legal disputes, including a $40 million federal lawsuit involving claims of false statements and racial discrimination.
Illinois GOP Chair Robert Grogan raised concerns about the endowment fund promised for the library, suggesting it has not met expectations and could potentially leave taxpayers liable for future costs.
The Obama Foundation has stated that the center is fully funded through private contributions and that its agreement with the city regarding an endowment has been met, specifying no particular dollar amount was required.
Unaddressed Slur at UFC Event
Meanwhile, neither Michelle nor Barack Obama has publicly addressed a slur made by UFC fighter Josh Hokit during a Donald Trump birthday event held on the White House South Lawn. Hokit, after a post-match interview, shouted, "Michelle Obama is a man!" The remark drew mixed reactions from the audience. UFC CEO Dana White has since criticized Hokit's comments, stating his opposition to making false and nasty remarks about people's families, while affirming his stance on free speech. Hokit has reportedly doubled down on his statement.
