Sorrel, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Dorking, Surrey, has abruptly ceased operations, with owner Steve Drake attributing the closure to what he described as "never-ending" tax increases imposed by the Labour government. The restaurant informed diners of cancelled bookings via email this week, stating it had made "the very difficult decision" to close with immediate effect.

Drake, a former protégé of Marco Pierre White, indicated that the business had incurred significant financial losses in attempts to remain operational, concluding that "the financials of running an independent restaurant simply don't work." He characterized the closure as "pretty devastating" and comparable to a bereavement, specifically blaming Labour's policies on National Insurance contributions and minimum wage hikes for the business running out of money.

Sorrel opened in 2017 in a Grade II-listed building, earning critical acclaim for its inventive dishes. Within two years, it was awarded a Michelin star, recognized for its "intricate dishes."

The restaurant had been facing financial struggles for several years. Drake had attempted to find a new investor, listing the business for sale in May for £195,000, but felt that rising taxes created insurmountable obstacles.

The closure has resulted in the unemployment of ten full-time and six casual staff members. Drake expressed feelings of isolation in managing the business, citing increased wage and National Insurance costs from April, coupled with a reduction in business rate relief, as contributing factors without adequate support.

Last year, Drake transitioned away from daily kitchen management, with Alex Payne, a former MasterChef: The Professionals quarter-finalist, taking over as chef-patron in June 2025. Payne confirmed the unexpected closure on Facebook due to financial difficulties, expressing pride in the team's achievements, including Michelin and AA accolades.

He also extended gratitude to patrons and supporters, stating that the experience meant a great deal to the staff. Payne indicated he is looking forward to his next professional opportunity, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the situation.
