Michael Strahan has shared a poignant connection to comedian Pete Davidson that originated in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Strahan, 54, revealed during a recent appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” that Davidson was among the children who joined New York Giants players on the field during the team’s first game back at Giants Stadium following 9/11. Davidson's late father, Scott Matthew Davidson, was a New York City firefighter who died while responding to the attacks when the comedian was 7 years old.
Fallon, discussing Strahan’s upcoming documentary, “9/11: United We Stand – 25 Years Later,” highlighted the surprising link involving Davidson. Strahan recounted how, years later, he met Davidson through his then-fiancée Ariana Grande. During their introduction, Davidson asked Strahan if he remembered the first game back at Giants Stadium after 9/11. When Strahan confirmed he did, Davidson revealed his own presence on the field that day.
"He goes, ‘I was the kid on your shoulder,’" Strahan recalled, describing the moment as "freaky" and a "full circle moment." He added, "Isn’t that wild?"
The documentary "9/11: United We Stand – 25 Years Later" explores how New York and the country came together in the aftermath of the attacks, focusing on healing through sports, entertainment, comedy, music, and Broadway. Strahan described the period following 9/11 as deeply painful and noted the documentary serves as a tribute to the victims, their families, and the first responders.
The special features contributions from figures such as Jon Stewart, Jon Bon Jovi, Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and Derek Jeter. "This is the biggest tragedy we’ve ever had around the country, not just here in New York City and I just wanted to honor everybody in this way," Strahan said.
Strahan expressed a strong personal bond with Davidson, stating, "Pete is like a little brother to me now. I absolutely love him. He’s such a gentle soul.”
"9/11: United We Stand – 25 Years Later" is set to premiere on ABC on September 1 and will be available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu the following day.
