Michael Kelly, known for his roles in "House of Cards" and "Jack Ryan," is returning as CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield in the third season of Taylor Sheridan's spy thriller "Lioness." Premiering August 2, the new season is described by Kelly as "batshit crazy" and potentially the most cinematic and dramatic installment of the series to date.
Kelly, who has built a career playing government officials, expressed a deep sense of responsibility in portraying the real-life women of the Lioness unit. He highlighted the importance of bringing awareness to their sacrifices for the country. "What those people do is everything," Kelly stated, emphasizing the unique opportunity to work alongside Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldaña on a show featuring central characters often played by men.
Regarding his creative process working with Sheridan, Kelly noted the creator's distinct approach. "With a Taylor show, you get the script, and that’s what you’re shooting," he said, a contrast to other productions where scripts are frequently revised during filming. Kelly also appreciated Sheridan's presence on set, offering clarification and discussion about character intentions, even for dialogue that can be complex.
Kelly touched upon his character Byron's disillusionment at the end of Season 2, attributing it to the immense pressure and sacrifices inherent in the CIA's work. He described Byron as someone who carries a significant emotional burden, suggesting that the mission's toll affects him more deeply than some of his colleagues. Despite these challenges, the Lioness program remains a high priority for Byron, particularly due to his reliable relationship with Kaitlyn.
The actor shared his admiration for his co-stars, including Kidman, Saldaña, and Morgan Freeman, calling his experience working with them "so cool." He recounted filming a particularly long, 12-minute scene in the situation room over two days, likening it to performing a "mini play" with some of the industry's most talented actors.
Kelly also reflected on the evolving landscape of television, noting how shows like "House of Cards" were pioneers in the streaming era. He feels fortunate to have been part of major streaming series that have significantly impacted how content is consumed. The upcoming season of "Lioness" is expected to delve strongly into themes of family and home, which Kelly believes will make the storylines particularly compelling.
