Michael Alfonso, a 26-year-old Republican candidate endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has won the GOP nomination for Wisconsin's 7th Congressional District. Alfonso defeated a crowded field in Tuesday's primary, seeking to represent the northern Wisconsin seat once held by his father-in-law, Sean Duffy.
Trump lauded Alfonso as a "MAGA Warrior" and a "young STAR" in a social media post on Truth Social, outlining key platform points including economic growth, tax cuts, energy dominance, and border security. Alfonso's campaign material also highlighted support for farmers, domestic manufacturing, and military veterans.
The district, which has been under Republican control for 15 years, is considered a solid GOP seat by Cook Political Report. Trump won the district with approximately 60% of the vote in the 2024 presidential election.
Alfonso will face Democrat Fred Clark in the November general election. Clark, a former Wisconsin state assemblyman, is campaigning on building a "new rural majority" based on the concerns of residents who live and work in the communities, rather than traditional political divides.
The seat is currently held by Rep. Tom Tiffany, R-Wis., who is seeking the Republican nomination for Wisconsin governor. Tiffany was first elected to the 7th District in a special election in May 2020 after Duffy resigned due to a child's health issues.
