Miami recorded a high of 100 degrees Fahrenheit this week, tying the city's all-time highest temperature, which was set on July 21, 1942. This marks only the second time in more than 130 years of record-keeping that Miami has reached this temperature.
The National Weather Service confirmed the reading, which occurred as a dangerous heat wave gripped much of South Florida. The high temperature also surpassed the daily record of 96 degrees set on August 18, 2022.
Residents experienced "feels-like" temperatures well over 100 degrees, prompting health officials to advise against outdoor activities during peak heat hours. The typical cooling ocean breeze was absent along the coastline due to west winds, exacerbating the heat.
The Miami heat advisory concluded Tuesday evening, with forecasts predicting cooler temperatures and a chance of rain for Wednesday. As of Wednesday, more than 72 million people across the region were reportedly under heat alerts.
