First Lady Melania Trump has issued a statement through her office clarifying her position on reports that Russian oligarch Umar Kremlev helped finance a wedding party for Donald Trump Jr. and his new wife, Bettina Anderson. Kremlev, who has been accused of facilitating the abduction of Ukrainian children, reportedly contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the celebration.
Melania Trump's spokesperson told the Daily Mail, "Mrs. Trump does not, and has never had, a relationship with Mr. Kremlev." The statement further emphasized that "Mrs. Trump played no role whatsoever in organizing the wedding event and was not privy to any aspect of its financial planning."
The wedding party took place in the Bahamas following an intimate ceremony in Palm Beach, Florida. Donald Trump Jr. and Anderson confirmed that Kremlev, a friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, hosted "two incredible nights of celebrations" for them, including covering the cost of renting a private island and a fireworks display. Bettina Trump defended their acceptance of his financial support, stating that "friendship doesn't require a political motive. Generosity doesn't automatically come with an agenda."
The involvement of Kremlev has drawn concern due to his alleged ties to the Russian organization Healthy Fatherland, which is under Ukrainian sanctions for its purported role in relocating Ukrainian children from occupied territories under the guise of 'rehabilitation.' Melania Trump has been actively involved in a campaign to reunite Ukrainian children taken to Russia during the ongoing conflict, having personally engaged with President Putin on the matter.
Donald Trump Jr.'s brother, Eric Trump, also stated through a spokesman that he had "absolutely no clue who this person is, nor has never heard his name."
Kremlev, who also serves as the president of the International Boxing Association, previously hosted Donald Trump Jr. for a panel discussion in Istanbul in December. His press office indicated that he and Trump Jr. became friends through shared interests in boxing, hunting, and the outdoors. Bettina Trump described the event as "a private family wedding, a wonderful weekend with friends and one hell of a party," denying any political motives.
President Trump and Melania Trump did not attend the wedding festivities. During his presidency, Donald Trump had previously stated he prohibited his family from doing business in certain countries, though he noted he received little credit for such actions.
