First lady Melania Trump made her first public appearance in a month on Thursday, addressing reports of her absence by stating, “I heard you missed me.” She made the remarks alongside President Trump at a Rose Garden event to promote her “Fostering the Future” initiative.

"Here I am," she added to applause from the audience. The appearance came as the first lady had spent most of the summer at the president's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The White House complex has been undergoing construction, including the installation of a new helipad and a ballroom.

Trump is scheduled to remain in Washington through the weekend to participate in festivities for the IndyCar Freedom 250 Grand Prix. The event includes a lap of honor around the race route, which circumnavigates the National Mall and historic landmarks.

To launch the race weekend, IndyCar and Fox Sports announced a $2 million donation to establish scholarships for foster care children at Indiana University and Purdue University. "The greatest investment America can make is not in technology, infrastructure, or capital markets — it’s our children," Melania Trump stated. "America’s greatest competitive advantage remains in its own people. Tomorrow’s leaders are sitting in classrooms today, including those growing up in foster care. Their capability is no less remarkable."

An IndyCar vehicle branded with the first lady's BE BEST and Fostering the Future initiatives was on display. Drivers Scott Dixon, Alexander Rossi, Graham Rahal, and Scott McLaughlin presented Trump with a custom red, white, and blue racing helmet.

Indiana and Purdue universities are the 25th and 26th U.S. universities to offer scholarships through the Fostering the Future program. The initiative, part of Trump's broader "Be Best" campaign, aims to improve the well-being, education, and digital safety of foster children. Her past efforts have included arranging Trump Savings Accounts for foster children, hosting international leaders' spouses to discuss children's issues, and lobbying Congress for increased foster care resources, a measure that has passed the House and awaits Senate approval.
