Mel Brooks, who celebrated his 100th birthday in June, requested that his scenes for the upcoming "Spaceballs" sequel be filmed as soon as possible due to his age. Daphne Zuniga, who reprises her role as Princess Vespa, shared this detail during a panel at 90s Con on Sunday.
"It was his idea: 'You better film me now because I’m 100.' So we did," Zuniga told reporters, according to People. Brooks has already completed his filming for the project, tentatively titled "Spaceballs: The New One."
The sequel is slated for a theatrical release on April 23, 2027. Rick Moranis will return as Lord Dark Helmet, and Bill Pullman is back as Lone Starr. Zuniga's son, Lewis Pullman, will play their on-screen son, the prince, and Keke Palmer is also part of the cast.
Brooks, a celebrated filmmaker and comedian, is known for classic films such as "The Producers" and "Young Frankenstein." He achieved EGOT status, winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards throughout his career.
Josh Gad, who collaborated with Brooks on the "Spaceballs" sequel, shared tributes to the comedian on his 100th birthday in June. Gad described working with Brooks over the past five years as a "greatest gift" and expressed excitement for the new "Spaceballs" film, stating, "I cannot wait for the world to see this next chapter."
